He was the creator of the mosaic of Otranto Cathedral (1163\u20131165). The exact place and dates of his birth and death are unknown. Presumably born in the early years of the 12th century, he is believed to have been of Otrantine origin. His name appears twice in the mosaic: once at the main entrance (\u201cper dexteram Pantaleonis<\/em>\u201d) and again in the central part of the nave (\u201cper manus Pantaleonis Presbiteri<\/em>\u201d). <\/p>\n He was undoubtedly the designer, site supervisor, and also one of the craftsmen of the famous mosaic, working together with a team made up of monks and pupils from the Monastery of San Nicola di Casole, an important Basilian cenobium later looted and partially destroyed by the Ottomans in 1480. In one of the circles of the presbytery, alongside a unicorn, there is the depiction of a monk who is believed to represent Pantaleone himself. We do not know for certain whether he was a monk of the Abbey; however, the cultural depth expressed in the mosaic suggests that he was connected with Casole, an important center of learning in the Western world with a rich and encyclopedic library (perhaps the largest in Europe), located precisely in the territory of Otranto. <\/p>\n The floor mosaic of the Cathedral, a work unique of its kind, is one of the most precious testimonies of the encounter between Latin, Byzantine, and Norman cultures<\/strong> in southern Italy. It was an expression of Otranto\u2019s central role<\/strong> in the 12th century as a crossroads of cultures and religions.
